And while this truck is available with a standard gasoline engine, optional diesel is still a better option. Carmakers are slowly but surely introducing hybrid powertrain options, along with the all-electric variants.

The base Sierra pickup comes with a 2.7-liter gasoline engine. This turbo-four variant develops 310 hp and up to 420 lb-ft of torque. Moreover, there is an optional 5.3-liter gasoline unit. On top of that, GM also provides a larger 6.2-liter gasoline motor with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, Sierra can tow up to 12,200 pounds. However, the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Diesel is still the most popular option. A 3.0-liter Duramax engine is a best-possible option.
Thanks to turbochargers, the diesel version generates 277 horsepower and a torque of 460 lb-ft. In terms of towing capacity, this engine is rated at around 9,250 pounds. Still, the difference is not that big, but the diesel engine is considerably smaller and it also provides good fuel economy ratings. Using a standard RWD setup, Sierra 1500 Diesel gets 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Some other rivals are also offering diesel engines and a slightly better towing capacity.
Competition
In terms of competition, the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Diesel will have a couple of them. However, diesel engines are slowly becoming the past and Toyota Tundra is one fine example. This popular truck will ditch the diesel powertrain. Besides the I-Force gasoline engine, Tundra will also feature a hybrid powertrain. On the other hand, American competitors are still here. That includes rivals such as Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. Interestingly, both models are offering hybrid versions already.
Furthermore, both trucks will also get all-electric variants as well. The Sierra 1500 truck is not far from that, with the latest reports strongly suggesting the Sierra EV model. To compare, Ford F-150 generates 250 horses and 440 lb-ft of torque via a 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine. The Ram 1500 truck comes with an EcoDiesel unit, providing 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of twists. Both models can tow more than the Sierra 1500 Diesel at the moment.
2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Diesel Release Date, Price
The upcoming 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Diesel will start at around $33,000. A diesel engine is only standard in the AT4 variant. It comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission and it provides a supreme off-road experience. The Sierra will go on sale later next year. The Duramax engine is available once again. It is a durable and very reliable unit, providing lower emissions.
