Volkswagen Group will deliver significant updates for the next season. Surely, the upcoming 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak will be the main star and it will draw most of the attention. One of the reasons for this is – the German company never was famous in the truck segment of the industry. Even though there’s the Amarok model for the Austalia and European markets, in the States this automaker is fairly unknown. Now, that’ can change with the release of the mid-size Atlas.
The new Volkswagen’s truck comes with a bit of radical design. For the mid-size segment anyway. The forthcoming model is based on the Atlas SUV, which means a car-like architecture. Well, that approach surely brings a couple of pros and cons in comparison to the traditional body-on-frame platform. Anyhow, we’ll have to wait until the last quarter of the year to see this SUV-based truck in action. The starting price will go around $25,000.
2021 VW Atlas Tanoak Styling
Well, we mentioned already that the 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak will ride on a unibody platform, Beside that the arriving model will share a good portion of features with the SUV version. Therefore, expect a bit different driving characteristics from the BoF trucks. Also, the specific design of the Atlas truck enables better handling and overall driving experience. On top of that, the ride is more comfortable and smoother.
But, the forthcoming VW’s truck won’t be as capable as other vehicles in the mid-size class. The payload will be significantly lower, as well as the towing capacity. The SUV version is 198.3 inches long. Well, the truck will add 11 inches to the wheelbase, and approximately 16 inches to the overall length. So, the 2021 Atlas Tanoak will be the largest mid-size model, 2 inches longer than Chevy Colorado. The front end of the truck will be identical to the SUV version. The Crew Cab layout is the only layout option for now. We’ll see if the German automaker will include other cab options before the release. The cargo bed measures 64 inches in length, and 57 inches in width.
As for the cabin, most of the features will be the same as in the SUV variant. But, the mid-size truck could upgrade some of the elements. For example, the hard plastic could be repčaced. as well as the dashboard. Furthermore, the Virtual Cockpit will be included as part of the standard equipment. All in all, the interior will provide more than enough personal space for passengers, and a decent level of comfort.
Engine Options, Release Date and Price
The upcoming 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak pickup truck model comes with a 3.6-liter V6 engine. This mill produces 276 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. Well, it’s a reasonable amount of power for the mid-size truck. The engine is connected to an 8-speed automatic transmission, which shifts power either to front-, or all-wheels. Moreover, the second drivetrain option could be a smaller 2.0-liter engine, which produces 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Even though this unit delivers slower acceleration, the fuel efficiency is simply outstanding.
As for the release date, we still wait for the official confirmation. According to the reports from the company, the mid-size Atlas will be ready before the end of the following year. The starting price should go around $25,000. while the main rivals will be Honda Ridgeline, Chevy Colorado, and Toyota Tacoma.
