Once Mazda was one of the most popular foreign automotive companies in the US. But, times are changing, and the Japanese carmaker is expanding its stable more and more every year. Now, the upcoming crossover lineup will reestablish the brand’s status in the States. However, one of the biggest mystery is – will the announced 2021 Mazda BT-50 will be available in North America?
According to the reports, it is going to happen as we can see. The mid-size pickup truck segment is getting very interesting; still, at the moment, Mazda isn’t capable of competing against the more powerful vehicles in the class. So, maybe the Fuchu-based automaker will copy the Australia case, where Mazda and Ford have a partnership and pickup record excellent sales.
Can 2021 Mazda BT-50 Make An Impact In the US?
The main reason for the possible 2021 Mazda BT-50 comeback on the US market is the new generation. This season marks a ten-year run of the 2nd generation. Therefore, the company needs a new model. If the truck comes to the States, it will no doubt bring a facelift and a couple of changes. We expect that both interior and exterior will go through a severe redesign.
Moreover, Mazda will probably look for references in the SUVs and crossovers. We all know that these types of vehicles have a very appealing design language. But, the mid-size truck will have to change a lot of things and upgrade many things. The interior must get a complete redesign as well.
The restructuring will have to solve some issues and provide easier access to the bed. Furthermore, the truck must be more capable for off-road duties. So, the Japanese company will have plenty to work if they want to make an impact on the North American market.
A similar case can apply for the engine room as well. If 2021 Mazda Bt-50 wants to succeed on the US ground, it must offer a new engine. The current units don’t meet the EPA requirements for efficiency and emission. Yet, more automakers in this particular class using a diesel drivetrain. Such truck as Jeep Gladiator, Ford Ranger Raptor, and Chevrolet Silverado.
Now, the Mazda truck will probably use a 2.3-liter and 3.2-liter mills when the BT-50 appears. But, with updates, these units can deliver more power. The 3.2-liter powertrain will probably be able to produce around 190 hp. Still, that’s not going to be the class-highest output, since the 3.0-liter mill in the Gladiator produces 250 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, Chevrolet Colorado generates 180 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque.
2021 Mazda BT-50 Release Date
The Mazda BT-50 is its last season for the current generation. So, the company must act quickly and deliver the pickup as soon as possible. However, the sales won’t start before the fall of 2020, and the very production depends on the markets where the truck will be presented. For example, Australia and Thailand are the best-selling BT-50 countries. Also, this model is trendy in South Africa.
